WHEELYBOAT APPEAL

The aim of this appeal is to raise enough money to help the Tay Foundation provide specialist Wheelyboats that will give freedom and independence on the water for disabled people of all ages.   It will give disabled people access to angling, nature watching and other water-borne activities and the opportunity and freedom to enjoy the River Tay and District, an area that is a magnet to many thousands of visitors throughout the year.

The RIVER TAY WHEELYBOAT APPEAL:

David and James preparing for Kilimanjro River Tay Wheelyboat climb Mount Kilimanjaro Disabled anglers in Wheelyboat

In October this year Jim McDonald, a 61 year old ex Royal Navy officer and his son David, a 37-year-old buyer based in South East England , will attempt to scale Africa’s highest point, Mount Kilimanjaro to help raise funds for the River Tay Wheelyboat Appeal.

Jim and David hope to raise at least £5000 towards this appeal and with generous support from family, friends, anglers and non-anglers alike, and local clubs, businesses, and associations they hope to be able to achieve this target.

Standing in Tanzania, East Central Africa on the border with Kenya, Kilimanjaro at 19,360 ft (5896m.) is Africa’s highest peak. Jim and David will be climbing the mountain via the lesser-known Rongai route. This route was taken in 2005 by the Everest climber and famous expedition leader Sir Chris Bonington and is the route that retains a true sense of wilderness, a feel of the real Africa. The one unpredictable factor on Kilimanjaro will be the altitude sickness, which is no respecter of fitness or age. Roughly 30% per cent of climbers who attempt to reach the summit don’t make it, but Jim and David have been training hard by continually building on their fitness and stamina out on the superb walking and trekking routes in Perthshire over the past few months in preparation for this very tough challenge.
