Salmon spawn above Stronuich Dam
in the upper reaches of the River Lyon but there
are concerns at how well smolts from that area
survive. Research partly sponsored by the Tay
Foundation has shown the water is unnaturally
cold in spring because it is released from a dam,
this affects the growth of fish and may also delay
their migration. Salmon parr will be tagged by
Tay Board staff with uniquely identifiable tags
prior to their migration as smolts. By emitting
a radio signal when passing a detector these tags
allow the migration out and return as adults to
be recorded, and their survival assessed.
By understanding these migration patterns it
is hoped that the dam can be managed to optimise
their survival.
